Live oaks and water oaks. The big shade trees of older Beaumont neighborhoods carry long, heavy, horizontal limbs, and water oaks in particular form tight V-shaped forks that crack under load. Weight reduction on those limbs, done selectively, is the single best storm-proofing money can buy here. One caution that good crews respect: as an oak wilt precaution, Texas foresters advise avoiding routine oak pruning from roughly February through June and painting any cut that has to happen in that window. Southeast Texas sees less oak wilt than the Hill Country, but the precaution costs nothing.

Loblolly and slash pines. Pines are not shaped the way hardwoods are. Trimming on pines is mostly about removing dead limbs and raising the canopy for clearance. A pine with a dying top or beetle activity is usually a removal conversation, not a trimming one, and an honest crew will say so.
Crape myrtles. The annual chop-to-knuckles routine seen all over town, often called crape murder, ruins the tree's natural form and spawns weak whips. Proper crape pruning removes crossing branches and seed heads and keeps the natural vase shape.
The Golden Triangle calendar gives you a clear window. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the historically active stretch late August through September. The smart sequence is structural pruning and weight reduction in late winter through spring, so wounds start closing and the crown is prepared before the Gulf gets busy. After any big blow, a walk-through for hangers and cracked limbs, ideally with a crew that can also check what you cannot see from the ground.
Dead, broken, or hazardous limbs are the exception to every calendar rule: they come off whenever they are found.
Topping, cutting main limbs back to stubs to make a tree shorter, feels like storm protection and does the opposite. The regrowth that sprouts from stubs is weakly attached and grows back fast, so within a few years the tree is just as tall, denser, and more likely to fail. The stub cuts also open decay columns into the main structure. Crown reduction done to proper lateral branches achieves the height and weight goals without wrecking the tree. If a bid says topping, get another bid.
For a healthy shade tree, no. Topping creates weakly attached regrowth and decay pockets, and the regrowth is more likely to fail in the next storm, not less. Any crew that leads with topping a mature oak is the wrong crew.
